Glass Animals: Otherwordly Ambient Rock

Oxford band, Glass Animals is David Bayley, Drew Macfarlane, Edmund Irwin-Singer and Joe Seaward.

The chorus of Glass Animal's song "Gooey" is impeccably written and horrifyingly descriptive: "While my naked fool, fresh out of an icky gooey womb / A woozy you, dopes upon a silky smooth perfume," they sing. It's not surprising that Glass Animals found its lyrics while reading Heart Of Darkness and watching The African Queen. But those smooth lyrics coagulate perfectly into a carefully concocted brew of otherworldly indie rock. Their synth-pop beats come from a grounded, tribal place while frontman, David Bayley's voice adds a lighter, iridescent quality.

The Oxford, England band began its obsession for music growing up on hip-hop, Flying Lotus and dance clubs in South London. Friends since the ages of 14, the four members debuted their first EP Leaflings while still in University. At an early gig -- where Bayley was cited to have face-planted on stage -- Glass Animals got the attention of producer and hitmaker Paul Epworth (Adele, Foster The People), who soon signed the band to his label Wolf Tone in 2013. Now, following its self-titled EP, Glass Animals debut album Zaba, was released this past June -- and has already been streamed over 20 million times worldwide.
