How To Write About Native Americans

Melaine Stoneman, a Lakota Sioux from the Pine Ridge Reservation, poses with her 5-year-old son in a Dakota Access protest encampment.

Students of Native American coverage in the national media viewed the Dakota Access Pipeline controversy with ambivalence. On one hand, an important matter of tribal sovereignty and treaty obligations is in the public eye. On the other hand, it’s yet another opportunity for Native Americans to be reduced to caricatures and their concerns reduced to a few hot-button issues.

The general dearth of reservation coverage isn’t helped by the fact that Native American journalists comprise less than one percent of the mainstream media. Bob spoke with journalist Aura BogadoGrist’s environmental racism reporter, about how the media can better serve and represent the indigenous population.
