The Irish Revolutionary Turned American Hero

General Meagher leading the Irish Brigade at the Battle of Fair Oaks, June 1, 1862. This Currier & Ives print helped to make the Brigade famous at a time when the Union was starved for heroes.

The incredible life of Thomas Francis Meagher could be an American folktale. In The Immortal Irishman: The Irish Revolutionary Who Became an American HeroPulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author Timothy Egan tells the story of Meagher, who became a leader in the failed Irish Rebellion of 1848, escaped from a prison colony in Australia, fled to America, enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, studied law and worked as a journalist and went on to become territorial governor of Montana.

Event: Timothy Egan will be speaking at the American Irish Historical Society (991 Fifth Avenue) on March 7th at 6:30 p.m.
