Is James Dolan a Bad Owner if the Knicks Continue to Profit?

Madison Square Garden Chairman Jim Dolan.

Many sports team owners end up becoming celebrities in their own right, but New York Knicks owner James Dolan has become famous for all the wrong reasons. Famed for his anti-media paranoia, and even for trashing some of his former players, many Knicks fans say Dolan is the team's single biggest obstacle to fielding a competitive team.

Dolan spends generously on the Knicks, and the team has acquired plenty of superstars during his tenure. The team made the NBA Finals during Dolan's first year at the helm in 1999, but has won just one playoff series since. Fans at Madison Square Garden regularly chant for Dolan to sell the organization, leading to several documented standoffs between the owner and his paying fans.

Bloomberg BusinessWeek contributor Josh Dean profiled Dolan for the magazine last week.

"I sort of came around to the idea that he's just not happy in the role. Maybe being terrible for 19 years can make a person miserable," he said. "I think it's really weighing on him."
