Studies indicate that at least 80% of rapes in the United States are never reported to authorities. Jon Krakauer wanted to understand why rape is so prevalent on American college campuses, and why rape victims are so reluctant to report sexual assault. In Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town, he investigated the University of Montana in Missoula where between 2008 and 2012, local police investigated 350 sexual assaults. A poor response to the assaults by law enforcement led to a yearlong Department of Justice investigation.
