
Some 18,000 New York City public school students will fill Madison Square Garden for a one-time performance of To Kill A Mockingbird, which is currently on Broadway. Aaron Sorkin adapted the 1960 Harper Lee novel for the stage, and the play has become the top grossing play in Broadway history.
But it's also controversial, because of the violence and racist language, including the use of the N-word. Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza told WNYC's Jessica Gould that the show will open students' eyes "to the tragedy of prejudice and the power of courage," and will be the first time many of the students see a Broadway show.
