Mets Return to Playoffs for First Time Since '06

After six straight losing seasons, the New York Mets have finally turned it around, winning their first National League East division title since 2006.

The NL East champs rebuilt around a stable of prized young pitchers such as Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, and Noah Syndergaard. The young aces kept the team in contention this season until the front office completely transformed the Mets' anemic offence in late July.

With a trade that brought prized outfielder Yoenis Cespedes over from the Detroit Tigers, as well as the return of team captain David Wright from injuries, the Mets suddenly found themselves with a potent lineup to go with all their pitching.

Now, the "Amazin's" want to bring a World Series trophy to Queens for the first time since 1986.

Jared Diamond covers the Mets for the Wall St Journal. He told WNYC's Richard Hake that the Mets have their work cut out for them going up against the Los Angeles Dodgers' top pitching duo of Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke in Games 1 and 2, respectively. But Diamond says when it comes to depth, the Mets have the edge.

"After [Kershaw and Greinke] the Dodgers pitching really drops off pretty dramatically, whereas the Mets continue to run out powerful young arms," said Diamond. "The Mets certainly have that depth, but this whole series will be about pitching. Both teams have a lot of it."
