New York City Council Gets Back To Business Over Zoom

The New York City Council held its first meeting since the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders went into effect, and like many virtual meetups these days, it was done over Zoom.

It had all the little quirks of most remote meetings: there were minor technical glitches, with some participants struggling with when to speak and when to mute, while others played with virtual backgrounds featuring photos of the now-empty City Council chambers. Naturally, a few pets made guest appearances, like Upper East Side councilman Ben Kallos' cat, who spent the whole meeting curled up by his side.

But it was still a City Council meeting—Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo brandished her gavel from her couch, as members argued over procedure and proposals.

New York's future is still in a crisis but for now, the council is getting back to holding hearings and votes.
