New York City is launching its much-anticipated municipal identification card, the largest program of its kind in the country.
The card is designed to make life easier for the city’s immigrants who don’t have legal status, giving them a valid form of ID to access city services and agencies. The New York Police Department, among others, will accept the card.
But with membership packages and discounts at major cultural institutions, the city hopes many other New Yorkers will also apply so that the card doesn’t stigmatize immigrants.
All New Yorkers who are 14 and older are eligible. The card will be free through the end of 2015.
