Voters in Newark will elect a new mayor and nine-member city council today. It’s the first mayoral election since Mayor Cory Booker left City Hall for the U.S. Senate last fall.

Vying for the spot are South Ward City Councilman Ras Baraka and civil rights attorney Shavar Jeffries. Both candidates are Democrats.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The current mayor, Luis Quintana, has been filling Booker's unexpired term since last November. Quintana is the first Latino mayor of New Jersey's largest city. He is running for re-election to the city council.

The new mayor will be inaugurated July 1.
