Getting a Second Chance After a Life Sentence

Director Katie Galloway discusses her documentary “The Return” which just won the Audience Award at Tribeca. “The Return” looks at efforts to reform mass incarceration in California and amend the "three strikes" law. One of the film's subjects, Kevin Bilal Chatman, was working in the logistics field during the 1980s until the economy crashed. After losing his job, Bilal was swept up in the crack epidemic. He was arrested and sentenced to a 150-years to life in prison for selling $200 worth of drugs to an undercover police officer. Bilal was released from prison in 2012. He now works as a logistics supervisor at a major organization.
"The Return" will open Point of View's (POV) 29th season on Monday, May 23rd at 10 p.m. on PBS.
