A guy from Brooklyn gave some advice to a guy from Queens about life in Washington, D.C. at a Wednesday White House dinner.
The public airing of a private meeting came when Schumer stood too close to a hot C-SPAN mic on the Senate floor Thursday.
The Brooklyn Democrat said he told the Republican president what he's learned from his 36 years in the nation's capital: that you need to leave yourself some wiggle room, politically.
“Here’s what I told him," Schumer said. " 'Mr. President, you’re much better off if you can sometimes step right and sometimes step left. If you have to step just in one direction, you’re boxed.' He gets that.”
Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi dined with Trump Wednesday. Later that evening, the two Democrats said they had reached a deal with the president over the DACA immigration issue. All sides agreed Congress should pass a bill that would allow some young, undocumented immigrants to stay in the U.S.
It's not clear who Schumer is talking to, but the person who greeted Schumer at the start of the conversation sounds a lot like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. McConnell has had a strained relationship with Trump, even though they are both Republicans.
Schumer sounded surprised that he and Pelosi got along so well with Trump.
"He likes us! He likes me, anyway."
