Securing the Border with Technology

What would the border fence of the future look like?

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson told Brian Lehrer Wednesday that America's borders need to be secured with technology, not just people.

What would that entail, exactly?

Edward Alden, a Bernard L. Schwartz senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations specializing in U.S. economic competitiveness U.S. trade policy, talks about thermal cameras, phone cameras, and other surveillance technology being used at the southern border right now, in addition to the 700 miles or so of fencing.

"People get across borders," said Alden. "There are lots of ways over, around, or under a wall." What he really doesn't understand is how today's presidential candidates can have so much respect for our military but seemingly no respect for our border patrol. Alden says, our border patrol officers are professionals, and they'll tell you we don't need a wall.
