Six Months: Rebuilding Our City, Rebuilding Ourselves

Media from around the World Get Update on World Trade Center Rebuilding

Six Months is an audio portrait of the world's greatest city recovering from one of the worst tragedies in its history. The programs are about New Yorkers rebuilding their city and trying to re-establish a sense of security in their lives-physical security, economic security and psychological security.

The documentaries examine the impact of the attack as it radiated through New York. Beginning in lower Manhattan we hear the stories of people who lost loved ones and co-workers, as well as firefighters and police officers who rushed to Ground Zero on September 11th. But we also come to understand how the attack affected all of the city: a mostly African-American neighborhood in Brooklyn where counter-terrorism suddenly became part of crime-fighting efforts; a Pakistani community in Coney Island where anxiety over detention and deportation multiplied in the wake of new government anti-terror efforts and laws; a Queens community where teenagers were forced to confront new fears about their own safety and that of their families.

We probably will never fully understand all the ways September 11th changed our world. But we can get a pretty good idea of what is different and what remains the same by looking at a particular point in time and a specific place. Using that knowledge we can also ask intelligent questions about what might happen in the future.

When it was first broadcast, Six Months reached out to New Yorkers to help them, and the nation, understand where they stood and where they might be headed next. The city was still in mourning, but the fires at Ground Zero no longer smoldered, and the pace of life was returning to normal as the initial shock of the attack began to wear off. All around New York people were diving into the difficult task of rebuilding the city and their lives. Six Months is a record of New York at a unique moment in history.
