Rep. Jeffries; Two NYPD Stories; West Farms: 10460: City Council Candidates; MLB and the Negro Leagues
Coming up on today's show:
- U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D NY-8th, Brooklyn and Queens), House Democrats chairman, talks about the latest on the Covid-19 relief bill, and other national issues before Congress.
- Jake Offenhartz, Gothamist/WNYC reporter, reports on how the NYPD's Strategic Response Group - formed as an anti-terror squad -- instead wound up heavily policing protests this past summer. Plus: Gothamist and WNYC filed a public records request years ago with the Bronx DA's office, asking to see an internal database they maintained of NYPD officers with credibility issues -- but the office has never released the information. George Joseph, reporter for WNYC's race & justice unit, talks about Gothamist's and WNYC's lawsuit against the Bronx DA for its failure to comply with the request, and why it's so important that it's made public.
- As part of our series West Farms 10460, we'll be interviewing candidates competing in the City Council District 15 special election. We begin these candidate interviews with Elisa Crespo, education liaison for the office of the Bronx Borough President, Oswald Feliz, tenant lawyer and adjunct professor at Hostos Community College, and Kenny Agosto, district director to New York State Senator Jamaal T. Bailey.
- In December, Major League Baseball announced that the Negro Leagues would be included in MLB's history and statistics. Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, MO, talks about the effort that went into convincing MLB to take that long-sought action and what it means for the legacies of the players.
