Tony Nominations: Nothing but Love for 'Hamilton'

"Hamilton" broke the record with 16 Tony nominations.

The Tony nominees were announced Tuesday morning and, to no one's surprise, "Hamilton" broke the record with 16 nominations.

"Hamilton took Broadway by storm and it took the Tony nominations by storm," said Joe Dziemianowicz, theater critic for the Daily News told WNYC's Jami Floyd.

Going up against the darling of Broadway next month are "Bright Star," from Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, "School of Rock" and "Waitress," both based on well-liked movies, and "Shuffle Along" with Audra McDonald and choreography from Savion Glover.

Whether musicals like "Tuck Everlasting" or "Disaster!" will make it far after receiving little Tony attention remains to be seen.

"The Tony Awards, for some shows, can be make or break," Dziemianowicz said. "This is about the same time that shows start announcing that they're closing too."
