There's music that was played on the first edition of New Sounds, Sept. 3, 1982, with music by ambient pioneer Brian Eno with and without guitarist, composer, and producer Robert Fripp; multi-disciplinary artist Laurie Anderson; and American minimalist composer Steve Reich. Also, minimalist composer Philip Glass makes a special appearance and presents music from the World Festival of Sacred Music.
From the World Festival of Sacred Music, co-curated by Philip Glass, and recorded in 2001 at Merkin Hall, listen to the sweet sounds of a trombone shout choir, The McCollough Sons of Thunder, led by Elder Edward Babb; a solo improvisation by Native American flutist of Navajo and Ute heritage R. Carlos Nakai, and a call to prayer by Kuwaiti-born Egyptian-American Sufi imam, author, and activist Faisal Abdul Rauf. Plus, the pop-inflected, fun, and difficult-to-categorize music of the Penguin Café Orchestra, an ensemble led by the late Simon Jeffes, and more.
