Where to catch peak bird migration in New York City

A Tree Swallow pauses to take in the scenery at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.

The next few weeks will be a peak time to catch migrating birds in our region. In fact, next Saturday, May 13 is "World Migratory Bird Day." And that means it's also a great time to plan some nature walks where you might see some of those visiting birds.

To help us with some ideas, we talked with naturalist and "Jamaica Bay Guardian" with the American Littoral Society, Don Riepe. The Littoral Society is a group that promotes the study of marine life and habitat, and protects the coast.

Don joined Weekend Edition host David Furst to talk about several ideas for nature walks - including the one he'll be leading on World Migratory Bird Day! Don's Spring Migration Warbler Walk will begin at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center next Saturday, May 13 at 10am. It's free and you can register here.
