Why New York And New Jersey Lawmakers Are Losing The Tax Debate

The Senate is poised to pass a tax bill over the objections of Northeast lawmakers. That follows the House, where some New York and New Jersey Republicans voted against their party's top priority.

The big issue is changes to the ability to deduct state and local property and income taxes. The House bill caps property tax deductions at $10,000 while the Senate eliminates them entirely.

WNYC Washington correspondent John O'Connor says Democrats, led by NY Senator Chuck Schumer, have limited options to stop the bill. And in the House, Republican lawmakers from New York and New Jersey concerned about the state and local deduction are outnumbered by lawmakers who represent areas with low taxes who'd rather see a corporate tax cut.
