The Great Studio 360 Doodle Dare

Inspired by vintage doodle books, our challenge gives you a fragment of a drawing to complete any way you’d like. Alison Bechdel, the noted cartoonist and winner of the MacArthur Fellowship (a.k.a. the genius grant), provided this doodle as a starting point; the rest is up to you.

UPDATE 11/22: Carolita Johnson is the winner of our challenge!
See the winning submission and the runners up. Thanks to everyone who shared their work with us!

I did a series called Veeptopus that featured portraits of vice presidents with octopuses on their heads. Now I'm working on a series involving President William Taft and badgers. Long story.

I was going for "matador", but perhaps Doodle Lady is simply trying to put a tablecloth onto a bull.

"At first I thought that she was hanging off of a cliff, but then I saw how her toes were turned under so I imagined that she was working hard on her car and her is checking to see if she's done yet."

I used Allison's doodle and made the girl a fairy who is obviously having trouble flying!

This here is my dog chikui and me. I am bribing my dog to try to grab the treat but she is just such a begger, when I'm eating she jumps on my lap and grabs the food right out of my hand, haha, little stinker.

I'm also submitting my 8-year-old niece's doodle, since we did it together.

I've been listening to the song "Fly me to the Moon" by different singers recently and made a doodle just for fun. And when I heard this doodle dare on NPR, I was inspired create something related to it that's magical. The figure Alison created seems to be holding on to something so I thought it would be fun to have her hold on to a magic carpet flying to the moon.

She looks like she is reaching for something so I drew her reaching for a kite.

I drew illustrations of various things I like like Macs, a Le Corbusier loveseat, and a fixie bike and put them together in a room. Alison's doodle girl is breaking in to snatch a hot dog.

I used a comic format to fit in a few of the images that came to mind when I saw Alison's drawing. I wanted to flesh out the picture while still leaving room for the viewer to create a story.

We all have dull shoes sometimes. Here's a regular girl, let's call her Sally, working the shoe shining. Don't be afraid of the waiting line, her shining skills are worth it.

It seemed to me that Doodle Lady looked like she could be clinging to the roof of a car, so I just went with that, and built this little action scene. How did she get up there? Why isn't driver guy pulling over? Do they know each other? Is this a getaway gone wrong or a weird Uber ride?

During a deep depression following a divorce, I taught myself to illustrate and draw in Photoshop. I added the doodle dare to a martini glass I illustrated a while back because I seemed to work in a cute way.

I printed out a copy of Alison's drawing and left it on my kitchen counter where I usually doodle while I'm on the phone. I was chatting to my friend, Beverly in California while I did it. The drawing was done in a stream-of-consciousness manner, where I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. If my doodle has any deep significance, I am unaware of it.

My art teacher found this competition and asked us all to create a drawing that we could submit to this competition. It took me a while to come up with an idea of what to do, but the idea of the girl fighting with a Japanese sumo wrestler came to me out of the blue, so I went with it. I ended up feeling very proud of it, and I hope y'all do too!

I drew inspiration from the show Doctor Who. This is one of the Doctor's new companions dangling from a cliff on a foreign planet in a different galaxy.
