Double Dutch Jumpers Perform in Manhattan

All-star jump-ropers from around the New York area performed for students at the Jackie Robinson Middle School in Upper Manhattan Wednesday. It was a preview of what will happen at the International Double Dutch Holiday Classic this weekend.

Cindy Hardy is a member of one of the teams, Jumpers in Command. She said she’s been jumping for 20 years, since she was 8 years old. “This is all I know to do in terms of sport,” said Hardy, “I travel all over the world introducing the sport of Double Dutch. I've been to Japan and South Africa. And so now the new thing is getting into the schools because not only is it fun but it’s healthy.”
 
Chelsea Roman, one of the students who saw the show, said she was inspired by the troupe. “I thought that they were excellent and that I should try out for Double Dutch because they go around the world and show what they can do.”
 
The group demonstrated tricks they perform in competition and gave the students a chance to try the sport for themselves.
 
Four New York teams will join competitors from around the world this Sunday at the Apollo Theatre.
