In 1996, riding the end of the grunge movement wave, a New York City band with the odd name "Nada Surf" found itself with a sudden MTV hit single. “Popular,” which featured a monologue about dating advice and a hooky chorus, was a bit of a novelty hit, and the band seemed to disappear shortly thereafter. In realty, Nada Surf was steadily writing songs and releasing albums, and achieving a few hits in Europe along the way. This year, the band releases an album of covers—If I Had a Hi-Fi. Nada Surf offers WNYC listeners a free download of “See These Bones” from the band's 2008 album Lucky.
