In recent years, there’s been a serious revival of the slow and slinky rhythm known as cumbia all around Latin America as young, cosmopolitan bands reclaim the '60s-era sound and mix it with contemporary music. Chile is no exception. But unlike the cumbia revivals in places like Argentina and Colombia, where electronic remixes rule the day, the revival in Chile is all about pure, old-school cumbia, played live. The band Chico Trujillo is leading the charge, making young Chileans from across the social spectrum move with its tight grooves and raucous horns. “Conductor” is a mid-tempo, minor-key cumbia. The song's seemingly benign Spanish lyrics, which tell of a truck driver, disguise a risque double meaning.
