Gig Alert: Grass Widow

Music Hub | Apr 21, 2011

Grass Widow
"Tattoo"
Playing Saturday night at Glasslands Gallery (289 Kent Ave., Williamsburg)
Info: Tickets ($10) | Directions

The San Francisco group Grass Widow is a trio of self-taught female musicians. Lillian Maring on drums, Hannah Lew on bass and Raven Mahon on guitar create a melodic, post-punk sound with three-part harmonies. Influences include other girl punk and post-punk outfits such as The Neo Boys and Kleenex, along with The Kinks and Roy Wood’s The Move.

You can hear the gals building harmonies over unusual chord progressions on “Tattoo,” which is available above for download here. While you're at it, check out the band's video for “Give Me Shapes.” It’s a coast-to-coast collaboration between Mike Stoltz and bassist Hannah Lew that features two jars of water, which trade places between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
