Heating Oil Phase-Out Part of City Clean-Air Plan, Mayor Says

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is turning up the heat on heavy oil pollutants as part of the city's clean-air plan.
The mayor said on Thursday that New York City wants to phase out the use of polluting heavy oils to heat buildings as part of the first update to the city's four-year old environmental plan.
The phase out would start right away.
The city said fine particulate matter from the air kills 3,000 residents each year and 6,000 are forced to seek emergency asthma treatment.
The city is aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 30 percent by 2030.
