Financial 411: A Look at This Year's New York City Auto Show

WNYC News | Apr 21, 2011

The New York International Auto Show opens to the public Friday at the Jacob Javits Center. While there are dozens of new cars and trucks on display, what's really getting drivers' attention is the rising price of gas. AAA said a gallon of regular now costs an average of $4.14 in New York City. Automakers appear to be paying attention. They're previewing a lot of fuel-efficient vehicles at this year's show.

"We've got to get more fuel efficient vehicles on the road," said Rebecca Lindland, director of automotive research at the global information company IHS. "Even if the consumer isn't necessarily demanding them yet, we do see the manufacturers coming out with them."

Lindland said Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards are part of what's driving the push. And she said the spike in gas prices is making consumers more interested in fuel efficient vehicles too. There's also concern this year about how the situation in Japan might affect the supply of cars, trucks and parts for repairs. Lindland talks about some of the latest hybrid and electric models, and what consumers can expect from the auto industry this summer.
