5 Suspects Indicted in Killing of NYPD Officer Peter Figoski

WNYC News | Dec 20, 2011

The alleged shooter who gunned down officer Peter Figoski last week will face first-degree murder charges, Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes announced Tuesday.

Lamont Pride, 27, who allegedly shot Figoski while trying to escape after what police describe was a botched robbery in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, was indicted on first degree murder charges, aggravated murder, murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. Pride pleaded not guilty.

He faces life in prison without parole if convicted.

Four others, who prosecutors say participated in the robbery organized by Pride, were also indicted.

Kevin Santos, 30, Ariel Tejada, 22, Nelson Moralez, 27, and Michael Velez, 21, were charged with murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree. They also pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Attorneys for the five men did comment outside the court.

The top charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

“This will be a trial,” Hynes said. “There will be no plea bargaining in this case.”

He was joined at the conference by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who said the “assault on a police officer is an assault on the society.”

“We can’t give back the life of officer Figoski to his family, but we can see to it, and I know that District Attorney will, that some measure that some measure of justice is given to the family,” Kelly said.

A funeral for Figoski was held Monday in Long Island.
