Listen: JACK Quartet and Guitarist Steven Mackey

Q2 Music | Nov 19, 2011

On Sunday, March 25 at 3 pm, the JACK Quartet celebrated the complex lyricism of American modernists Charles Ives and Ruth Crawford Seeger and teamed up with composer-guitarist Steven Mackey to present his Physical Property in another of Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concerts.

Amidst a hyperactive new-music scene, the New York-based JACK Quartet has made a name for itself with relentless, top-class championing of the emerging and remote regions of the string quartet repertoire. Their recording of the complete Iannis Xenakis string quartets for Mode Records met with critical acclaim, and their close working relationships with composers such as Georg Friedrich Haas and James Dillon has further cemented their reputation.

Composer-guitarist, Princeton University music professor and member of the "prog-rock" band Big Farm, Steven Mackey, has straddled the divide between experimental concert music and improvisatory jazz and rock musics. His onstage collaboration with JACK Quartet for Physical Property is a meeting of the minds, an opportunity to demonstrate their shared commitment to open-minded musical dialogues.
