The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle, Solo In The Studio

Since the 1990s, John Darnielle has put out music with The Mountain Goats . In fact, for a good chuck of time, he was The Mountain Goats, serving as primary singer-songwriter and guitarist. The band is currently a trio -- filled out by Peter Hughes and Jon Wurster. But its newest release, Transcendental Youth, adds yet another sound to the mix: brass, which takes a central role in the song "Cry For Judas." 

Still, despite the larger sound on the album, Darnielle is perfectly capable of stripping down these songs and playing them by himself. Darnielle recently dropped by the studio to play a solo session at the piano, and to share the origins of his new music.
