After Boston, NY and NJ Transit On Heightened Alert

In the wake of the Boston bombings, transit systems around New York and New Jersey are beefing up security.   It's part reassurance, part having "more eyes and ears -- and in the case of police dogs -- noses out there," says an MTA spokesman.

Thirty state troopers and two dozen police dogs are patrolling train stations and platforms on Metro-North and Long Island Railroad lines, and in Grand Central Terminal and parts of Penn Station. Radiation detectors are humming away at the same locations. And police are conducting extra patrols, surveillance and random bag searches in the subway.

NY Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Adam Lisberg said the measures have been put in place out of caution and not because of a specific threat. "There's no indication that there is any kind of safety and security risk," he said. "These forces are being deployed both to reassure our customers and employees that we have appropriate and adequate security in place for the system."

The Port Authority is posting additional officers at The World Trade Center, the PATH train, bridges, tunnels, airports and seaport locations. And New Jersey Transit is on heightened alert, with uniformed and plain clothes officers patrolling the system, along with officers from the federal Transportation Security Authority.
