#3458: Qawwali and Qawwali-based Music
Hear an hour of Sufi devotional music, mostly Pakistani and usually sung by men, known as Qawwali for this New Sounds program. Listen to this ecstatic prayer music performed live by the late great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Party in the WNYC studio, from a November 1993 appearance. Then there’s an arrangement of Nusrat’s “Allah Hoo” by the Brooklyn Qawwali Party, using jazz band instrumentation, recorded live from the 2009 Globalfest.
Also, listen to a version of one of Nusrat’s “great hits,” - “Mustt Mustt,” from the Indo-Canadian singer Kiran Ahluwalia, featuring Tinariwen, the nomadic Tuareg musicians from Northern Mali. Hear qawwali music from Afghanistan by the Ahmad Sham Sufi Qawwali Group, and there’s something from the female “Queen of Qawwali,” Abida Parveen as well.
