Belgium’s Rubio String Quartet so loved their violins, viola, and cello, created for them by English instrument maker David Rubio, that they replaced the ensemble’s original name with their current moniker. They perform live in the studio and talk about the late, great violin maker Rubio. “Instrument carpenter” Ben Hume makes music on instruments he crafts himself. He’ll give us a demonstration. Plus, reporter John Kalish offers a glimpse at the art and commerce of violin construction.
