South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela has made a name for himself mixing American jazz with sounds from his native land. Today, he speaks about his involvement in a new documentary and explain how music played a role in changing the political landscape in his homeland. Also, dancer and choreographer Elisa Monte tells us what she's been doing with the music of Steve Reich, David Lang, and others to prepare for her company’s upcoming performances at The Joyce Theater.
The new documentary Amandla!, featuring Hugh Masekela and other South African musicians, chronicles the life of South African composer and activist Vuyisile Mini. The film, which is directed by Lee Hirsch, opens in New York on February 19.
