The India/Brooklyn Connection

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
For decades, India tabla player Zakir Hussein has been at the forefront of the world music scene. He was a pioneer in the fusing of Eastern and Western music with groups such as Diga Rhythm Band, Planet Drum, and Shakti and through his solo work. Now, he is in New York performing, with the jazz pianist Ethan Iverson, the music for the Mark Morris Dance Group performance at BAM. The two musicians will be in the WNYC studio to give a preview of this new work. Also, Steve Gorn keeps the spirit of Indian music alive with a live performance on his bansuri, an Indian bamboo flute. Music writer and Indian classical music expert Anastasia Tsioulcas drops in to give us the big picture on the Indian music scene.
