Estonian Excellence

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
Tired of the symphonic equivalent to the same old Chinese takeout? Try an alternative musical dish: Estonian-born conductor Paavo Jarvi. Only 40 years old, Jarvi has already become one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation. Today on Soundcheck we speak with the sometimes outspoken Mr. Jarvi, who hopes to develop the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra based on “youth and the future” not “the established (group of) overpaid--and complacent--superstars.” Also, we speak with artist Matthew Barney and composer Jonathan Bepler. Bepler, whose inspirational sources range from Native American scalping songs to Hungarian opera, has provided the music for Barney’s the Cremaster cycle.
