Sloane Takes On Cleopatra

In 2000, Steven Sloane became only the second music director of the American Composers Orchestra in its twenty-five year history. Today on Soundcheck, Sloane discusses his latest undertaking, a concert version of Samuel Barber’s extravagant (and initially disastrous) opera Antony and Cleopatra. Also, we speak with Alex Ross, music critic of The New Yorker, who recently returned from a long research trip to Germany. He discusses the differences between Germany and the U.S. in how contemporary classical work is received.
