The Apparat Organ Quartet is comprised of four Icelandic musicians operating ancient, highly customized electric music machines, including cheap home organs, Farfisas and Russian synthesizers. And one drummer. They play rhapsodic, austere, mechanical, mysterious and strangely beautiful elektro-pop elegies inspired by Steve Reich, Gary Glitter, Klaus Wunderlich, 70's horror soundtracks and Karlheinz Stockhausen. They join us on this edition of Soundcheck, as does Hector Del Curto, who won the title of Best Bandoneón Player under 25 when he was only 17 years old. The Argentinean has traveled the world both as a soloist and chamber musician, and he's found his way to the Soundcheck studio for a live performance. And, from just one floor down, WNYC's Dean Olsher, host of The Next Big Thing, stops by with our weekly CD review.
