Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen is one of the modern-day greats in the singer-songwriter tradition, and with his gravelly voice and highly literate canon of songs, he has been the subject of numerous tribute recordings and concerts over the years. Two more unlikely artists to find inspiration in Cohen’s unflinchingly honest and world-weary songs join us today on Soundcheck. Spanish flamenco singer-songwriter Enrique Morente stops by to perform selections from a new program at the Brooklyn Academy of Music that combines Cohen’s songs, the texts of poet Federico Garcia Lorca, and additional music by the Spanish rock band Lagartija Nick. We’re also visited by Josh Ritter, a young Idaho-bred songwriter whose literate songs, low-key delivery and haunting acoustic arrangements recall Cohen.
