Club Classics

In an effort to strip classical music of its stuffy reputation and lure younger audiences, an enterprising group of Juilliard School students and graduates formed a unique organization called Ten O’ Clock Classics. Designed to introduce people their 20s and 30s to classical music, the group presents chamber concerts in non-traditional settings around New York, including health clubs, apartment buildings, and even the famed nightclub Studio 54. Today on Soundcheck, the group’s artistic director, Ronen Segev, and cellist YuJeong Lee, drop by to talk about their activities and offer a performance. Also, music journalist and author Fred Plotkin visits to discuss some of the notable debuts taking place around town over the next week, by the rising Czech mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozená, the conductor Gianandrea Noseda, and more.
