Symphonic Play-by-Play

Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
Would it be nice to have someone with you at a symphony concert explaining what's happening with this music? The Concert Companion is an electronic gizmo that resembles a Palm Pilot or a Blackberry and provides a play-by-play analysis that guides listeners through a concert hall performance as it's happening in real time. Wall Street Journal music critic Greg Sandow has helped to write the texts for these devices, which are being put to the test this week at the New York Philharmonic. He joins us today to talk about this attempt by orchestras to lure members of multi-tasking generation to concerts.
