Rhythm Nation
Soundcheck | May 3, 2010
Have you ever listened to Latin American music and felt yourself adrift among a sea of foreign rhythms? Today on Soundcheck, we get a Latin primer courtesy of Columbian singer-songwriter Marta Gomez. Her music draws on the Colombian cumbia, Argentine zamba, Cuban son, Peruvian landó and Brazilian bossa nova, among other rhythms. Called a "pure-voiced folk traditionalist and jazzy pop adventurer at the same time" by the Boston Herald, Gomez can be heard on her new solo album "Cantos De Agua Dulce." Also on the show is Dan Storper, CEO and founder of Putumayo World Music. In the past ten years, that label has become known for its upbeat and melodic compilations of international music from around the globe. Considered a pioneer in developing the non-traditional market, it has come a long way since its origins as a clothing company in the 1970s.
