#3755: Krautrock

On tonight’s edition of New Sounds, some not-so-new music which is still influential today. Listen to Krautrock, the German electronic music of the 1970s, including pieces by three of the most significant men from this scene: Conrad Schnitzler (1937-2011), Edgar Froese (1944-2015), and Dieter Moebius (1944-2015).

First, “Sowiesoso,” a record by Cluster. Founded by the late Dieter Moebius, Cluster helped establish Krautrock and inspired (and still inspires) musicians of many other genres. One of these musicians is Brian Eno. Next in this episode, listen to a collaboration between Cluster and Eno called “Ho Renomo,” and then one of Brian Eno’s solo tracks, released in 1977 and exemplifying the influence Krautrock had on his music.

Then, another very successful Krautrock band, Tangerine Dream, founded by Edgar Froese; early incarnations of the band included Conrad Schnitzler, Steve Jolliffe, Peter Baumann, and Klaus Schulze. And finally, an early Cluster song, from when they were still named Kluster.
