#3763: New Sounds of Lesser-Heard Bowed Strings
Listen to music made by lesser-heard bowed string instruments – like the viola da gamba, the viola, viola d’amore, and cello – everything but the violin. Hear up to sixteen layers of cello in works by composer Zoe Keating, from her record, “One Cello x 16: Natoma.” Then, there’s music for viola da gamba by Gerald Trimble, which draws on Moorish music, with a nod to Henry Purcell. Also, hear music from violist/composer Jessica Meyer, who works with a looping pedal, on her solo record, “Sounds of Being.” Listen to her “Source of Joy,” which works as “an entire orchestra of emotion.” Then, there’s music for viola d’amore from Garth Knox, who together with cellist Agnes Vesterman, arranges and improvises upon a Flemish song sometimes attributed to Ockeghem – “Malor me bat.” And more.
