Risking Death for Freedom: An Escaped Survivor Looks Back at Vietnam

The Takeaway | Apr 22, 2015

In 1975, just days before Saigon fell to the Viet Cong, 13-year-old Pascale Phuong Dang escaped Vietnam with her mother. Her father and two older siblings remained behind and were sent to reeducation camps.

The family lost touch, and while Pascale feared the worst, her father was planning a daring escape and was determined to reclaim his freedom.

For The First Days Story Project, a collaboration of PBS's American Experience, WGBH and Story Corps, Pascale recounts the tale to a friend.
