#4005: Blurred Electronic/Acoustic Works

New Sounds | Jul 26, 2017

Listen to largely electronic works that use acoustic sounds in a way that blurs the distinction between the two. Hear music of patterns and pulses for synthesizer from west coast-based sound-maker and experimenter Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, whose forthcoming record, The Kid, is due out in October. Then, hear music from the Austin, Texas-based minimalist instrumental ensemble, Balmorhea, whose first new record in six years is also coming this fall.

There's also music by Floating Points, the nom de disque of English musician and neuroscientist Sam Shepherd, whose latest record and film, ‘Reflections - Mojave Desert', is a something of a timeless atmospheric soundscape under the desert sky, using a combination of both acoustic and electronic instruments. Plus, new music from Oregon, yes, that Oregon, which still features two of the original band members and main composers, guitarist/ pianist Ralph Towner and multi-reed man Paul McCandless. After some 46 years together, their latest record is out, and it's called Lantern.
