#4008: Music By Jazz-Adjacent Artists

Hear jazz-adjacent music from the UK quartet Dinosaur, Laura Jurd’s Mercury Prize-nominated band, the downtowny garage-chamber jazz-tronica septet The Cellar and Point, and other music that limns the divides between jazz, chamber, rockenroll, minimalism, and electronica.

Led by trumpeter & composer Laura Jurd, Dinosaur features keyboardist/inventor Elliot Galvin, Conor Chaplin on electric bass and Corrie Dick on drums. Hear playful, electronic-infused, sometimes spaced out, sometimes systems music-leaning muted swirls of Rhodes and trumpet, propulsive and expressive fuzzed electric bass and drums, in music from Dinosaur's Mercury Prize-nominated 2016 record, Together, As One. 

Then, listen to music from the New York-based septet that goes by Cellar and Point, which is a glitchy-groovy combination of chamber music, jazz, rock, and electronic music. To give a further idea of where they might be coming from, members of the group have performed with JACK Quartet, Mivos Quartet, Ensemble Signal, and Mantra Percussion.

There's also new cinematic music in the post-rock and jazz-ish wheelhouse by Brooklyn-based Canadian sax player and composer Chet Doxas, whose band, Rich in Symbols, has a release due out in September 2017 (Ropedope Records.) Doxas and his brother, drummer Jim Doxas, have also played together in a quartet with trumpeter Dave Douglas, featuring bass player Steve Swallow, on The New National Anthem, in music honoring the impact of pianist Carla Bley.
