#4013: Chamber Jazz
Listen to chamber jazz, both archival and brand new. Hear new music from piano legend Ahmad Jamal, composer/innovator/percussionist Tyshawn Sorey, and Finnish-born NY-based guitarist/composer Olli Hirvonen, along with a 1989 in-studio duet by Carla Bley and Steve Swallow. Plus, “Timeless” music from guitarist John Abercrombie and more.
Piano legend and octogenarian Ahmad Jamal has just released Marseille, after the city in Southern France. The title is a personal expression of gratitude to the French people for having enthusiastically supported Jamal throughout his career. (He was awarded the Chevalier De L'Ordre Des Arts Et De Lettres in 2007.) The record features three versions of the title track, and we’ll hear the funky and spacious instrumental, “Marseille.”
Then, there's music from Finnish-born NY-based guitarist/composer Olli Hirvonen who mixes all of the influences he’s been exposed to, from rock & metal, as well as his own Finnish background and jazz. He further posits “but as jazz is definitely black American music, I would never want to avoid the core elements that make it what it is, it’s [sic] language, rhythm, and improvisation."
Also, there's new music for piano trio from the composer, percussionist, trombonist, pianist, improviser, and innovator Tyshawn Sorey, from his most recent, Verisimilitude. Plus, hear music from Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, recorded in the studio from 1989, along with song-led jazz from Liberation Prophecy (Louisville, KY) led by saxophonist/composer Jacob Duncan, whose inspirations include Carla Bley. Music by guitarist John Abercrombie featuring Jack DeJohnette and Jan Hammer from a 1975 ECM LP, Timeless, rounds out the show.
