#4022: Small Seeds, Big Pieces (Piano Edition)

New Sounds | Sep 12, 2017

For this show, hear big pieces that grow from little musical seeds. Listen to music from Russian composer & pianist Anton Batagov, American composer & professor Marti Epstein, and music from Stephen Scott’s Bowed Piano Ensemble.

Listen to music from Stephen Scott & his bowed piano ensemble. To achieve the orchestral potential contained within the body of a piano, they assemble around the instrument, and take off the lid to play the insides. Each player is equipped with either tiny cello bows for short bursts, or fishing line for sustained notes as they wield their bows to unleash the piano's untapped timbres and colors. Listen to “The Tears Of Niobe,” from the record, Minerva’s Web. About the Bowed Piano Ensemble

Also, hear a work from Anton Batagov, which begins with a simple piano motif and builds on it – from a project Where We Are Not- Letters of Mother Seraphima. It’s based on visit to a cemetery, where Russian émigrés are buried. These letters from one of them speak to the issues of forced migration, and of being an outsider.

Then, listen to a third piece, “Waterbowls,” by composer/professor Marti Epstein and performed by Kathleen Supove – which is built on two smaller musical gestures. Listen for the abstract spray of notes and a stately classical-sounding sequence of chords.
