#4024: At Sea - Nautically Themed Music
Listen to nautically-themed music, and music about being lost, plus music built on sea shanties for this New Sounds.
From the record Bottle from Eliza Carthy and Tim Eriksen, hear a traditional tune with influences from both hardcore ‘Americana’ with hardcore ‘Anglicana.’ Folk singer Eliza Carthy comes from the English folk tradition (she is the daughter of English folk musicians singer/guitarist Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson) and she is known for her folk fiddling, while Tim Eriksen specializes in American traditional music from New England and Southern Appalachia. Also, listen to a different setting of the same tale from Andrew Cronshaw and June Tabor, in the tune “A Ship in Distress.”
There’s music with nautical imagery, maps and charts, flags as distress signals, and a section drawing on old sea shanties by Jeremy Peyton Jones - his "North South East West," along with music from Gavin Bryars, and his work, “The Sinking of the Titanic.”
Then hear layered music from composer Patrick Grant built around a field recording of sisters singing a sea shanty, “Seven Years At Sea,” recorded by Alan Lomax in the 1940’s. Listen to the growled vocals of Joseph Spence and the original “Sloop John B.” along with playful music about drowning from 3 Mustaphas 3 on a tribute record to Joseph Spence.
