#4026: Tour of Babel - a Cross-Cultural Musical Odyssey
Inspired by a mis-translated song on the collaborative record by Canadian ensemble Constantinople and BELEM, “Tour de Babel,” hear a program of songs in many different languages – but no intentional confusion. Hear trance-like music made in Bamako, Mali from Tuareg singer Leila Gobi, along with music from Punjabi singer Arif Lohar from Pakistan. Listen to traditional Ottoman kanun and classical Persian setar from Turkish and Iranian members of the Montreal-based Constantinople in collaboration with the cello-accordion chamber music duo BELEM.
There’s also music from the Persian classical singer Bahar Movahed & Iranian lute player Ali Akbar Moradi, along with music from Kronos Quartet, in collaboration with Mariachi artists Alejandro Flores & Efren Vargas from their record Nuevo. Listen to Irish music, Swedish folk, jazz, and percussive dance all stirred together in music from the group This Is How We Fly. Then hear music from a collaborative group called Monoswezi, with members from Mozambique (Mo), Norway (No), Sweden (Swe), and Zimbabwe (Zi), from their recent record, A Je.
Plus, there’s music from Tanzanian singer Msafiri Zawose traditional Gogo style music, from the Wagogo people in Central Tanzania, and more.
